Second Lieutenant Wilfrid Armstrong Fox (1912)

12 October 1892 – 29 July 1915

Entered College in Michaelmas Term, 1912. A member of the 1st Cricket XI, 1912. A member of the University Contingent of the Officers’ Training Corps. Commenced service on the 4 August 1914. Served as Private until he received his commission in October to rank as from 20th August 1914.  Second Lieutenant of the 4th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Served in France and Belgium. Killed in action at Hill 60, Zillebeke on 29 July 1915.

Lieutenant Colonel Barrell wrote:

During the time he was with us he endeared himself to every one of us, and he had the makings of a very good officer.

A Horncastle soldier said:

The unfortunate death of Lieut. Fox occurred in these trenches. It would have been a job to find a more capable man in the battalion. His cheery manner was just the thing that’s wanted out here, and although he was not in our company and had not been with us very long, his loss was felt acutely by the whole of the battalion, who appreciated his readiness to help in any concert or sport that was arranged to pass the evenings while we were resting. Most of us knew him as a Private, and all agree that he was a jolly good Private and an ideal officer
