Entered College in Michaelmas Term, 1914. A member of the University Contingent of the Officers’ Training Corps. Commenced service on 8 April 1915. Second Lieutenant of the 3rd Battalion Devonshire Regiment, 1915; attached to the 25th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps, 1915; Lieutenant, 1916. Served in France and Belgium. Awarded an M.C. for:
Conspicuous gallantry during operations. He supported the infantry attack with a machine gun. After practically all his gun team had become casualties he served the gun himself, and remained in action as long as the gun could be of any use.
