Lieutenant John Algernon Wynyard Peyton (1911)

2 November 1892 – 22 August 1918

Entered College in Michaelmas Term, 1911. A member of the 1st Rugby Football XV, 1911 – 1912. 3rd History and B.A., 1914. Joined the University Contingent of the Officers’ Training Corps on the 26 December 1914.

Commenced service on 19 March 1915, gazetted as Second Lieutenant of the 3rd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment, 1915. Attached to the 8th Battalion, 1917. Promoted to Lieutenant attached to the 7th Battalion, March 1918. Served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from April, 1916; wounded on the Somme in May 1916. On recovery in January 1917 and returned to France. Was wounded again and invalided to England but returned again to France in April 1918. He was killed in action on the Somme on the 22 August 1918. An officer wrote:

He was a very brave soldier, and I do not think he knew what fear was.
