Captain Arthur James Dingle (1910)

Entered College in Michaelmas Term, 1910. A member of the University Contingent of the Officers’ Training Corps. A member of the 1st Rugby Football XV, 1910 – 1913 (Captain, 1912 – 1913); University 1st Rugby Football XV, 1911 – 1912. B.A., 1913. Assistant Master at Durham School, 1913 – 1914. A Durham, Oxford University and England International Rugby three-quarter back; played rugby for the North of England, 1911 – 1912; County Durham, 1913; for England v Ireland, 1913; England v. France, 1914; England v. Scotland, 1914.

Commenced service in September 1914. Second Lieutenant of the 6th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment; Lieutenant, 1914; Captain, 1915. Killed in action at Sulva Bay in the Dardanelles on the 22 August 1915 while defending a captured trench against overwhelming odds. (‘De Ruvigny’s Roll of Honour, 1914-1919’, Volume 5, pg. 100)
